The Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District will begin a week of patriotic events in Spring Hill Cemetery on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 when 3,000 American Flags return to Spring Hill Cemetery for the Healing Field. The Healing Field serves as a patriotic vigil to the thousands of victims of the 9/11 tragedy, recognizes the lives lost in the 1970 Marshall Plane Crash, memorializes Veterans of the Armed Forces and lost loved ones. Flags can be purchased for $35 at Spring Hill Cemetery and proceeds will benefit the Spring Hill Cemetery Memorial Bell Tower Fund.
The 5th Annual Memorial Bell Tower 5K Run/Walk will take place at Spring Hill Cemetery on Saturday, September 9, at 8:00 a.m. This closed course event will take place on portions of the Paul Ambrose Trail for Health and will start and finish next to the Memorial Bell Tower. Participants should expect mild inclines and declines with panoramic views of the City of Huntington, the Marshall Memorial, the Healing Field, and the Memorial Bell Tower. Early registration is $25 before September 1, late registration is $30 from September 1-9, and Student Registration is $10. All early registrants will receive an event t-shirt and late registrants will receive event t-shirts as quantities permit. Box 2985, Huntington, WV 25728-2985, and in-person registration is available at the GHPRD Office in Heritage Station and Spring Hill Cemetery. Checks should be made payable to GHPRD and proceeds will benefit the Spring Hill Cemetery Memorial Bell Tower Fund.
The Marshall March of Remembrance will take place on September 11, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. A Procession of Marshall Students will carry 75 flags from the Marshall Rec Center on 5th Avenue, south on 20th Street, to Spring Hill Cemetery. The students will place 75 flags in the Healing Field inside Spring Hill Cemetery before joining the Patriot Day Ceremony.
Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11 designated to the memory of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This year’s Patriot Day Ceremony at Spring Hill Cemetery will include local officials, First Responders, Veterans of the U.S. Military, GHPRD’s Executive Director Kevin Brady, patriotic music from local singers, and Keynote Speaker Tom Bowen. A new Plaza built around the World Trade Center Artifact Memorial will be unveiled in Spring Hill Cemetery during this Ceremony. This Ceremony is scheduled for Monday, September 11, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery. Refreshments will be provided following ceremony.
September 12 will be set aside as a Day of Reflection before the Healing Field® is taken down on Wednesday, September 13. Healing Field® participants are asked to retrieve their flags on September 13 before 4:00 p.m.
