For the 6^th straight year a beautiful vista of red, white and blue will appear on Utica’s Memorial Parkway as The Good News Center hosts its annual Healing Field® display of 1,000 United States Flags.  Certainly, meaningful in the past years, this display takes on increased significance as our heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic are honored along with our armed forces and veterans.  The days leading up to and surrounding Veterans Day are the perfect time to remember and honor the men and women who have by their dedication become heroes in our lives.

However, this year has offered new challenges and The Good News Center also posted flags months early during spring to honor medical heroes who were working long hours with limited resources to treat the sick and comfort the dying.  With them the flags honored all those who made it possible for Americans to follow restrictions to slow and stop transmission of COVID-19.  The list is long and includes truckers, grocery store workers, first responders and many women and men who exposed themselves to health dangers in order to protect their fellow Americans. We are all in this fight together, and the United States Flag symbolizes our unity as a people.

Our unity as a people is expressed by the U.S. flag, which symbolizes our shared history, values and aspirations.  As we have come together to overcome a pandemic that has ravaged the entire world, we have gained increased appreciation for heroes who have placed themselves in harms way to protect and serve us all.

Flags may be dedicated to individuals for $35, and after the events close, they may be retained by the sponsors to be presented to heroes and their families or to be displayed by Mohawk Valley residents.  Proceeds will benefit Sitrin’s Military Rehabilitation Program, which provides physical therapy care for those with health problems resulting from injury or disease.
