Steuben Trust Company Green Space, One Steuben Square, Hornell, NY 14843
Posting hundreds of flags on the green space of Steuben Square serves as the high point of the way St. Ann’s Academy commemorates Veterans Day; nevertheless, the students and faculty make the display and it program the focus of numerous activities that include everyone from preschoolers through elementary school classes Kindergarten to 6th Grade. Hearing 3-year-old & 4-year-old children recite the Pledge of Allegiance, watching students march from the St. Ann’s Academy to One Steuben Square, watching students folding a larger U.S. flag, and hearing essays read themed to honor some of our nation’s heroes—this demonstrates that at St. Ann’s Academy, the love of country has real meaning.
While this has a huge impact on everyone at the Academy, it has become an impressive annual gift for the Hornell community. All are reminded of the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans, while especially honoring those who have given their lives in the defense of freedom and our nation.
During last years program honoring the 100th anniversary of the Armistice ending the First World War, Hornell Mayor John Buckley quoted President John F. Kennedy who said, “The highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” For this reason, it is appropriate to honor those who honored the flag by flying the Stars & Stripes in their honor. Each of the more than 450 flags that will fly in the display tell the story of a hero that has earned our gratitude.
This impressive event community is made possible through donations, sponsorships and the efforts of many dedicated volunteers. You can show your support and gratitude by sponsoring a flag or making a donation. The display is open to all without charge. Please come and bring family & friends.
