The men and women who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States may not have been appreciated, recognized or thanked in the past. However, Clarksville is succeeding in a gigantic way, where others have failed, to honor and thank America’s veterans. The city’s visitor bureau, Visit Clarksville, expressed the goal beautifully on its website:

Join us in Clarksville, Tennessee September 18–22 to celebrate the service and sacrifice of veterans from across the years, miles and conflicts. This is a time of reflection, remembrance and reunion.

The entire community has come together to make sure that this sentiment translates into reality. This Welcome Home extends not only to those recently returned from deployment, but all the men and women who have worn and do wear the uniforms of our military services. Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Sailors, Coast Guardsmen will experience sincere appreciation.

Exhibits, displays and ceremonies testify that the service of sacrifice of is not forgotten.

  • 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit honoring those killed in the 2001 attacks. Military, firefighters, police and paramedics died along with the other the innocent victims of the 9/11 attacks. These martyrs and heroes remind all that freedom has a cost which is never completely paid.
  • Traveling Korean War Memorial replica of Washington D.C.’s memorial. Not a monument of laurel wreathes, columns and winged statues, the Korean War Memorial depicts the drudgery that accompanies that war. Rain, snow, mud and cold became common companions even when battles were not raging.
  • American Traveling Tribute Wall reproduction of Vietnam Memorial. The Vietnam War memorial on Washington, D.C.’s mall pierces the heart of America as few monuments have. The simple listing of names dramatically shows the cost of war in a way that fits the experience of that conflict. The Traveling Tribute wall brings the poignant experience to Clarksville as visitors may search for family and friends who sacrificed their lives in the jungles of Southeast Asia.
  • Welcome Home Parade through historic downtown Mooresville. Whether veterans served in conflicts stretching from WW II to the current war against terrorism, the reunion of veterans with the greater Clarksville committee has become an anticipated annual tradition. A parade accomplishes this superbly.

If all this is not enough, add a free concert by Lee Greenwood to touch hearts in a way that only he can. We have a National Anthem, a National Hymn and a National March—still Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA” expresses a feeling that continues the musical sentiment expressed by them all.

One other display reaches out to embrace all with the display of the Stars & Stripes. The 3rd Annual Field of Honor®, hosted by Visit Clarksville, posts hundreds of U.S. flags which continue and complete the motto: Welcome Home Veterans—Never Forget. Sponsoring a flag in tribute honors a veteran in a unique way. The displayed flag symbolizes the shared aspirations that underlie the service and sacrifice of veterans. Every flag represents a person and tells a story.

The Clarksville Field of Honor® display is a gift to the community made possible through donations, sponsorships and the efforts of many dedicated volunteers. You can show your support and gratitude by sponsoring a flag or making a donation.

All are invited to visit the 2018 Clarksville Field of Honor® display and walk amid the columns and rows of flags standing in a solemn formation. Don’t miss it.
