The historic Jacobus Vanderveer House and the Stars & Stripes share roots stretching back to the American Revolution, making this treasured landmark the ideal setting for Bedminster’s 11th Annual Field of Honor®.
In 2026, this powerful tribute carries even deeper meaning as our nation commemorates the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America — a historic milestone honoring two and a half centuries of courage, sacrifice, patriotism, and the enduring spirit of freedom. From the earliest days of the Revolution to the heroes of today, the Field of Honor® reminds us that liberty has always depended upon ordinary Americans willing to serve, protect, and sacrifice for something greater than themselves.
Two centuries ago, thirteen red and white stripes stood for the union of thirteen British American Colonies that created the United States of America, while thirteen white stars in a blue field symbolized the new nation they formed together. When Major General Henry Knox made the Vanderveer House his headquarters during the Revolutionary War, he proudly displayed this flag. Today, those original thirteen stars have grown into fifty, and one flag flying over the Vanderveer House has multiplied into an inspiring formation of hundreds of American flags honoring military heroes, veterans, first responders, and personal heroes whose service and sacrifice continue to strengthen our nation.
As America reflects upon this solemn and historic anniversary year, the Field of Honor® also acknowledges moments throughout our nation’s journey that have tested and united the American spirit, including the 25th Anniversary of September 11, 2001. While this year’s display is centered on celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary and honoring all who have defended freedom across generations, the remembrance of 9/11 remains part of the shared story of sacrifice, resilience, service, and patriotism that defines our nation’s history.
The Field of Honor® stands as both a celebration and a place of reflection — where stories of courage, unity, sacrifice, and service can be shared with younger generations so they may better understand that freedom is never guaranteed and has always come at a cost borne by brave Americans throughout our history.
Everyone is invited to walk among the ordered rows of American flags so that the mature may honor and remember, and the youth may learn, reflect, and gain appreciation for those who have defended our freedoms throughout our nation’s history. This moving tribute brings the community together in a shared celebration of patriotism, remembrance, gratitude, and hope for future generations.
The Bedminster Field of Honor® is a gift to the community made possible through donations, sponsorships, and the dedication of many volunteers committed to preserving the values that unite us as Americans.
