Recognizing heroes is a Greenville tradition that goes back to the city’s naming in 1786. General Nathaniel Greene emerged from the American Revolution as the hero of the Carolinas, Georgia and Virginia, and when he died in 1786, Greenville was named in his honor. In years, decades and centuries since countless heroes have created and shape the city, state and nation.
