US Marine Joel Devine of Mansfield was stationed with the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Maine Division in Hawaii and needed help. He had a group of Marines being deployed to South Korea and he wanted to give them each a US flag.

Unflagging patriotism: Mansfield Field of Honor in third year

Last weekend the third annual Field of Honor was erected, with more than 300 American flags standing in perfect rows next to the South Common. Each flag represents an individual and tells a story about a member of the active U.S. military, a veteran, a first responder or a hometown hero, including teachers, coaches and others who make positive impacts in our community.

Mansfield’s Field of Honor, a giant display of American flags honoring veterans, service personnel, first responders and community heroes, will hold its opening ceremony and erect hundreds of flags at the Keach Memorial near the South Common on Saturday, May 20.

On Saturday, May 20, Scouts of all ages helped troop leaders and others prepare flags for third annual Field of Honor presentation. The Field of Honor was then officially opened with a special ceremony. The Field of Honor will be on display along West Street until June 17.

Field of Honor seeks sponsors, flag buyers
Mansfield’s Field of Honor volunteers point out that the deadline for purchasing American Flags for the annual benefit display on West Street is Tuesday, May 1.
The mammoth flag display is scheduled to begin Saturday, May 19.

For the 4th straight year, flags will fly proudly during the days surrounding Memorial Day of 2018 at Mansfield’s Field of Honor® flag display. This event has become a fond tradition for Mansfield as U.S. flags measuring 3’ X 5’ will stand in a solemn formation atop 7½ foot white flagstaffs. This beautiful panorama of red, white and blue will welcome area residents as they join to honor those who wear and have worn our nation’s uniform.
