During the days surrounding the 9/11 observance of Patriot Day, the Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District and Spring Hill Cemetery will post 3,000 American Flags at the cemetery for their 8th Annual Healing Field® event. This solemn formation serves as a patriotic vigil honoring thousands of victims of the 9/11 tragedy and recognizes the lives lost in the 1970 Marshall Plane Crash, while memorializing Veterans of the Armed Forces and lost loved ones. Healing Fields of Honor

First lady’s visit draws attention to opioids effect on foster care system

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — There are many people in the Tri-State area who have been affected by the drug epidemic including countless families. Some of whom have been ripped apart, with children living with foster families as their parents battle addiction.

Adoptions officials hope the first lady’s visit will help their mission.

Melania Trump called Huntington a place that is very special to her. During her visit Monday, she saw firsthand the number of children in foster care in the area, largely due to the opioid crisis.

Healing Field returns to Huntington cemetery

The Healing Field is making its return to Huntington. The Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District is holding the Healing Field at Spring Hill Cemetery from Sept. 6 through Sept. 13. Thousands of American flags are placed at the cemetery to serve as a vigil to the thousands of victims who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, as well as those who died in the 1970 Marshall football plane crash and Veterans of the Armed Forces.

On Wednesday, Sept. 6, the Park District will place more than 3,000 American flags at Spring Hill Cemetery for the only Healing Field in West Virginia. Flags will be on display through Sept. 13 and can be purchased for $35 at Spring Hill Cemetery. Proceeds benefit the Spring Hill Cemetery Memorial Bell Tower Fund.

Huntington’s WTC Artifact Memorial Opens Sept. 11

A new Plaza built around the World Trade Center Artifact Memorial will be unveiled in Spring Hill Cemetery during the Patriot Day Ceremony. This Ceremony is scheduled for Monday, September 11, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery, 1427 Norway Ave, Huntington, WV 25705 (home of the 9/11 Healing Field).
