Draper’s Gold Star Families Memorial

August 31, 2023May 1, 2024

12500 South 1300 East Draper, UT

Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments honor the families of active military members who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Made of black granite, these double-sided monuments bear the inscription, Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, a tribute to Gold Star Families and Relatives who sacrificed a Loved One for our Freedom on one side. On the opposite side of the monument are scenes etched on each of the four panels: Homeland, Family, Patriot and Sacrifice. Centering this tribute is a silhouette of a saluting service member, representing those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

The Gold Star Family Memorial was created by Medal of Honor Recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams to remember those families who have made the ultimate sacrifice. To learn more about the memorial and Woody’s legacy, visit the Woody Williams Foundation website.

In honor of those who have made this sacrifice, a new Gold Star Families Memorial Monument honoring the families of servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives while serving in the military is currently being planned in Draper Park. This monument will join four others in the state from Sandy, South Jordan, North Ogden, and St. George.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on March 21 at Noon at Draper Park, with plans for completion by early July. A community ceremony will be held to commemorate the completion. Our intention is that this monument and the surrounding area will be a place of peace and comfort for those who visit it.

Community members are welcome and encouraged to donate to the funding of this monument. All donations will be designated for the Draper City Utah monument. Any excess funds raised for this Gold Star Families Memorial Monument Project will be used to further the mission of the Woody Williams Foundation to honor and serve Gold Star Families and the legacy of their Loved Ones who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Memorial to Gold Star families being built in Draper

DRAPER, Utah — A new memorial coming to Draper City Park will honor Gold Star families who have lost loved ones in active-duty service.

“We are, by nature, part of the military family,” said Gold Star father Tony Galvez. “They incorporate us, and we need to be available and do things that they can come to and remember their brothers and sisters.”

DRAPER — Pleasant Grove resident Kim Olsen grew up in a military family, with her father serving in World War II.

That military pedigree didn’t leave the family after she and her husband, Todd Olsen (whose father also served in World War II), had kids. The couple’s oldest son served in the United States Navy and her youngest was a Marine.
